COMPLETING THE PLAY
"For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere" (1 Thessalonians 1:4-8).
A few years ago while coaching a local community college softball team, I noticed something interesting about most of the infielders with whom I was working. While playing, there were many times the team was in a position to attempt a double play. Yet more times than not, their response was to get the first out, but not to look for the opportunity to complete the double play. Why didn’t they relay the ball from second base to first? Why were they satisfied with one out when they could have had two?
Paul saw the Thessalonians as "relay" stations. They not only received the gospel message, but sent it farther on its way. As a follower of Christ, you have received the greatest gift of all—a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Has the gospel stopped with you, or are you relaying God's plan of salvation? Don’t allow the message of the saving life of Christ to stop with you; "complete the play"!
TIME OUT!
1) Have there been times in your life when you’ve only gone for the "first out"? What was your reason for not following through?
2) Why is it important for you to "complete the play"? Are you fulfilling your responsibilities as a team player for the kingdom of God?
3) Think of at least one or two individuals in your life with whom you could relay the message of the saving life of Christ this year. How do you plan to "complete the play" or follow through?
